Skillz Academy is seeking a driven and personable individual to design and lead student onboarding and career preparation services for Skillz Academy’s training programs. As Director of Student Services, you will be responsible for tracking, managing and guiding students’ pre matriculation and post graduation activities and processes including, but not limited to, financial aid, enrollment, interview preparation, employer onboarding and other related activities.  You will be a core member of our growing team and will help develop the company’s brand as the leading source of diverse talent for business oriented jobs in tech in the United States. 


Who We Are 

Skillz Academy is the training arm of Upriver Solutions, a Job Tech company that is focused on recruiting, training and placing diverse candidates from underrepresented backgrounds in business oriented tech jobs. We like to think of ourselves as focused on the “business of tech” as opposed to the “science of tech” and as a result you won’t find any coders, engineers  or developers in our classes – all of our programs focus on the business side of tech. Our first program is an intensive, software sales training bootcamp that is specifically designed to make it easy for people from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds including women, minorities, and/or those from low income communities to gain an onramp to high paying jobs in tech. 




  • Design and implement an efficient and effective student onboarding process
  • Develop a system to track and manage students’ financial aid applications and obligations
  • Deploy and leverage data systems to track key metrics related to onboarding and financial aid in order to generate analytics and inform future procedural adjustments
  • Develop and manage an annual budget for the student services department
  • Build relationships with state and federal agencies that provide subsidies or funding to help defray the tuition cost of our programs 
  • Special projects/initiatives as assigned


Student Onboarding

    • Communicate Skillz Academy’s tuition payment structures and financial aid opportunities to applicants
    • Manage the funnel from the moment Skillz Academy accepts a candidate through the candidate’s enrollment in the program
    • Ensure that all onboarding paperwork is provided to and completed by incoming students prior to the program start date 
    • Identify, deliver and confirm that accepted candidates are in compliance with all regulatory requirements prior to their start date
  • Manage and work with staff to identify students who are not making adequate academic progress and design appropriate interventions


Career Support & Guidance

  • Review resumes and cover letters and provide feedback to students
  • Rehearse job interview techniques with students and provide feedback
  • Advise students on professional etiquette, language, and attire
  • Assist students with identifying strengths and areas of improvement to help build career and leadership skills 
  • Counsel students through  success inhibiting barriers and challenges to ensure they are able to stay on track with program completion and obtain a job
  • Connect students with employers and guide them through the interview process
  • Support graduates through employer onboarding procedures 



Position Requirements 

Knowledge & Experience

  • 3+ years of enrollment, admissions, or career services experience
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office/Google for Work Apps
  • Working knowledge of applicant tracking systems (ATS) and customer relationship management (CRM) tools and management
  • Knowledge of state and federal student funding sources and  financial aid processes
  • Interest in and passion for adult education and diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • A demonstrated commitment to making the world a better place exemplified through volunteering, past work experience, and/or familiarity with theories of economic empowerment and social justice

The Director of Student Services role is a part-time contractor position and is compensated hourly with the potential to move into a full time position compensated with a combination of salary, benefits, and equity.
